Tom Cavin

Tom has been dancing for most of his life. “I first saw Gene Kelly dancing in “Singing in the Rain” when I was 4 years old, “ he said. “Half way through the film I said to my parents, ‘I want to do that!’”

He firmly refutes the notion that “real men don’t dance”, and is passionate about fostering a love of dance in all of his students.

Originally from Scotland, he received his early training at the Dance School of Scotland before completing a BA in Theatre Production at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music And Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).

He has been teaching dance in Melbourne since 2000 and met his beautiful wife Miriam on the dancefloor in 2001. They worked together in Melbourne for a few years before heading to Europe and dancing in Piazza San Marco in Venice, Paris jazz clubs, candlelight parks in Zagreb, London nightclubs and a hundred other places. This helped form their viewpoint that if you know how to dance, you can have great time anywhere in the world.

Miriam and Tom have three beautiful children and when not running around after them, they try to bring their love of dancing to anyone who wants to learn. They opened Phoenix Dance Studio together in 2011.
