World of Dance Championship 2017

THE TITLE OF PHOENIX DANCE STUDIO WORLD OF DANCE CHAMPION COMES WITH $1000 CASH PRIZE AND ETERNAL GLORY FOR THE VICTOR!

This years World of Dance Championship is starting to heat up as the entrants sign up to compete for the Title, the Glory and the $1000 cash prize.

We also have the first of our sponsors on board so we’ll start introducing you next week.

Here’s the rundown on how it works.

This championship is not for the faint hearted as every dancer has their achilles heel and even with the best laid plans there is no knowing which dance you’ll draw. Contestants have their dance drawn at our social dance at Phoenix dance studio on the 3rd June. Then they have just 5 weeks to perfect a dance showcase in that style to be performed in full costume on 8th July.

The 3rd June will be a great afternoon for a dance and also a good chance to chat with some of our suppliers and sponsors about dance wear and shoes. Everyone is welcome. Towards the end of the afternoon, dances will be drawn from a hat by our brave contestants to discover which particular dance they will be working on for the next 5 weeks of blood, sweat and tears!

Anyone can enter from any level, and the music, choreography and costuming is decided by their instructor in consultation with them.

Feel free to speak to any of our instructors if you want more details or if you have any questions about the World of Dance Championship. Half the spots are gone already so if you’re ready to go, excited and feeling brave then get your name down quick!

Dance Floor Etiquette

Dance Floor Etiquette

At Phoenix Dance Studio we have a pretty friendly  and considerate crowd of people. But every now and then, we get asked about what to do and how to behave at functions, group classes and practices. So here you go, a few simple things to keep in mind when dancing with a partner.

1. Remember you’re not the instructor.

When you are dancing with someone who is making some mistakes it’s tempting to correct them as you dance around the floor. If they ask for help, that’s one thing, but nothing is certain to make them trip up more than having  a partner pointing out everything that they are doing wrong. The best way that you can help them is to focus on your own dancing and be a good partner for them. If you are in a class, ask the instructor for help by saying something like “We are having a bit of trouble with this bit, can you have look at it?”

2. Look as fresh as possible.

Clean clothes? Showered in recent memory? Deodorant? Breath check? You’re going to be dancing in pretty close with a few different people. As a courtesy to them make sure that you are pleasant to be close in with. If you sweat a lot, that’s fine, you’re dancing and getting hot, but perhaps bring a towel, or excuse yourself to freshen up now and again.

3. Look around.

When you’re dancing, be aware of your surroundings. Yes, the gentlemen are leading, but ladies should have their dance floor radar switched on too. Also, remember that experience gives way to inexperience on the floor. If you have been dancing for some time then you should know several ways to manoeuvre around dancers who are still working on the basics, don’t plough through them just so you can show off that new combo that you’ve been working on.

4. Don’t be shy.

Men, stand up, walk over and ask her. It’s just a dance for goodness sake and you’re in a dance studio, it’s what everyone is there for. Ladies, there’s no reason that you can’t get up and ask the man for a dance, it’s not 1930. I assure you that so long as you are clear and polite it is incredibly unlikely that anyone will say no.

On the other side, if you are asked to dance and are going to say no, you’d better have a very good reason for it. At a dance venue it’s pretty impolite to turn someone down the first time that they ask you. So unless you’re injured or tired from having just been on the floor (in which case say so), get up on your feet and have a dance. It can often take a bit of courage to ask someone to dance, so respect that and say “Yes, thank you.”

So there you are, it’s not rocket science, just courtesy and respect for others. Happy dancing!

Argentine Tango & Swing Group Classes

Argentine Tango & Swing Group Classes

We have two new group classes starting this month!

Every Monday evening there will be an Argentine Tango Class at 7pm and then a Swing Class at 7:45pm.

Argentine Tango and Swing are two of our most enduring and popular dance styles and are both asked for regularly at our Saturday Morning Street Latin Class and whilst both dances will still be covered in rotation with the other Street Latin dances on Saturdays at 11:30am,  we felt that classes were needed to focus of these styles exclusively also.

All levels are welcome so don’t be shy if you feel that these aren’t your strongest styles and don’t worry if you’ve danced these quite a bit already, there will be plenty in the classes to challenge and progress your dance skills.

See you on the dance floor!

Monday –7.00pm Argentine Tango;  -7.45pm Swing

Tuesday –7.00pm Salsa

Wednesday –7.00pm Modern ballroom-English Tango

Thursday –7.00pm Latin American -Samba

Friday –5.30pm Beginners Salsa and Bachata

Saturday –11.30am Street Latin -Swing

Free Salsa & Bachata Class!

Free Salsa & Bachata Class!

During May we tried out a free Salsa & Bachata class on Friday evenings. We are happy to announce that it’s been a success and therefor we will keep it running as an ongoing class.

It’s still free and a fantastic way to get your weekend off to a great start. The class is tailored for beginners but that doesn’t mean that the more advanced dancers won’t pick up some good tips and techniques as well.

World of Dance Championship 2015

World of Dance Championship 2015

It’s nearly here!

Every year, we have our biggest night of dancing at the Phoenix Dance Studio World of Dance Championship with a cash prize for first place of $1000.

Entry is open to anyone taking lessons at Phoenix, even if you’re only taking those lessons to win the World of Dance Championship. Beginners to advanced dancers are all welcome to try, but entry is limited to just fifteen places and entry closes on 13th June 2015.

So, what’s involved? What do you actually have to do to win $1000?

During our Salsa & Bachata Dance Party on 13th July we will match up each entrant with one of fifteen dance styles selected at random. Then they have the next five weeks to perfect a uniquely choreographed routine in that style and perform it on the evening of the championship. Don’t be nervous about entering, challenge yourselves and you’ll be amazed what you can achieve in a short period of time.
